What Hebel is

Hebel is a brand of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) — lightweight panels and blocks used widely on Adelaide new builds, upper storeys and extensions. It’s quick to build with and insulates well, but the raw surface has to be rendered to be weatherproof and finished.

Rendering Hebel the right way

AAC isn’t rendered like brick. It wants a purpose-made base coat with reinforcing mesh embedded through it, then a flexible acrylic topcoat — applied to the manufacturer’s system so the warranty and the performance hold up.

That mesh-reinforced base is what stops joints and panel edges telegraphing through as cracks later. Skip it or rush it and the finish shows it within a season. We do Hebel to spec, every time.

Does Hebel need rendering?

Yes — raw AAC needs to be rendered to be weatherproofed and finished. It’s rendered with a purpose base coat, reinforcing mesh and an acrylic topcoat to the system spec.

What render do you use on Hebel?

A Hebel/AAC render system: a mesh-reinforced base coat followed by a flexible acrylic topcoat. It’s different from a plain sand-and-cement render on brick, which is why it’s worth having someone who knows the system.

Why does Hebel render crack?

Almost always because the reinforcing mesh or base coat wasn’t applied to spec. Done correctly — with the right base and mesh through the joints — a Hebel render stays sound.
