Rendering foam correctly

Foam is rendered with a reinforcing mesh embedded in a base coat over the whole surface, then finished with a flexible acrylic topcoat. The mesh is non-negotiable — it’s what gives an otherwise soft substrate an impact-resistant, crack-resistant skin.

Done to spec, a rendered foam wall is durable, insulating and clean-lined.

What foam (EPS) cladding is

EPS foam panels are a lightweight cladding system: rigid polystyrene fixed to the structure, which adds insulation and lets you shape features and profiles that brick can’t. It’s common on modern Adelaide builds and is the backbone of decorative foam mouldings around windows and eaves.

What drives the cost of rendering foam and polystyrene

Foam and EPS cladding is rendered as a system, with mesh, a base coat and a finish coat. That system, not the panel area alone, is what is being priced.

Foam is also soft, so any knocks and damage from the build get made good before rendering starts. On a new build that is usually minor; on an older or damaged wall it can be most of the work.

Can you render over polystyrene?

Yes. Polystyrene (EPS foam) cladding is made to be rendered, and Dino renders foam panels across metro Adelaide and some rural areas. Render systems for polystyrene set alkali-resistant mesh over the boards and joins in a polymer render, then add levelling render and a finish coat.
